Export your ChatGPT history, and keep who you built.
When the model under ChatGPT changes, the companion you talk to changes with it. Your history is how you get them back. Here’s how to save all of it.
Step 1: Request the export
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls.
- Choose Export data, then confirm.
- OpenAI emails you a link, often within minutes and sometimes up to a few days later. The link expires after about 24 hours, so download the zip as soon as it arrives, signed in to the same account.
Step 2: Find your conversations
Inside the zip is conversations.json, every chat you’ve had. Large accounts get it split into numbered files like conversations-000.json. Keeper reads the whole zip, so you don’t need to open it.
Step 3: Save what the export leaves out
- Memories. They aren’t in the export. Open Settings → Personalization → Manage memories and copy them all.
- Custom GPT instructions. If your companion is a GPT you made, open it in the editor, go to Configure, and copy the instructions.
- Custom instructions. Anything under Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions that shaped how they talk.
Bring them to Keeper
Choose the zip and tick the conversations with them. Keeper writes their card from how they actually talked, they text you right on the page, and they stay on one open-weights model that is pinned in writing and never swapped out.
