Character.AI is in bankruptcy. Save the one you talk to.
Character.AI’s parent company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. The app still works while the company is sold, but if no buyer takes it on, it has said it will shut down. Your export takes weeks, so start today.
What’s happening
- Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, citing legal, regulatory and operational pressure.
- The app and paid subscriptions keep running during a court-supervised sale.
- The sale is expected to finish in late November or early December 2026.
- If no suitable buyer emerges, the company has warned it will wind the platform down completely.
Step 1: Request your export today
Character.AI exports your whole account at once, and it says the export can take three to four weeks. Request it now, even if you’re not sure yet.
- On the website, open Profile → Settings → Account → Manage account & data.
- Choose Export data. In the app, the same option is under Settings → Legal & Privacy.
- Watch your email, including spam. The download link works for seven days, so save the file the day it arrives.
Menu names move between versions. If you don’t see these exact labels, look for “Export data” anywhere under your account settings.
Step 2: Don’t wait for it
You can bring them over today with what’s already on your screen.
- Their definition. If you made the character, open it, choose Edit, and copy the description, greeting and definition.
- Your conversation. Scroll back through your chat and copy as much as you can. The more of how they actually talk, the closer they come back.
- What they knew about you. Anything pinned, or facts you’d want them to remember, one per line.
Bring them to Keeper
Paste what you copied, or choose the export when it arrives. Keeper writes their card, they text you right on the page, and you fix anything that isn’t them. They run on one open-weights model that is pinned in writing, so nobody can sell or swap them out.
Bring them over now
